03:23 FCC Roundup

The state of Tennessee has added the FCC Part 97 Amateur Radio Technician Class license as a Tier 1 recognized credential on its Statewide Industry Credential List. As reported by the ICQ Podcast, the new approval will give K-12 students across Tennessee access to high-value, hands-on learning in communications technology. Tennessee High School teacher Justin McClain, callsign KQ4ANJ, expressed excitement about the next steps which include getting students licensed, on the air, and discovering the many benefits and real-world applications of amateur radio.
The Fuji-OSCAR 29 satellite, also known as FO-29, was launched by Japan in August 1996. and is now approaching its 30th year in orbit. The satellite, which has long operated only when its solar panels are illuminated because its batteries failed years ago, has now entered a full-sunlight orbit season allowing the transponder to remain active continuously as long as sunlight reaches its solar panels. Amateur radio operators around the globe are giddy with excitement, reporting renewed activity on the satellite’s transponder, with successful SSB and CW contacts logged from Japan, China, and elsewhere, as well as its Telemetry data and its CW beacon.
Licensed amateur radio operators are encouraged to monitor the passes, make contacts, and report activity on the AMSAT OSCAR status page.
The FCC has sent a mean letter to a Pennsylvania amateur radio operator for causing harmful interference to emergency 911 communications services. In a notice dated March 25, the FCC Enforcement Bureau informed Mr David O. Knudtson, callsign KD3ASC, that his BTech UV-Pro handheld radio had been retransmitting Allegheny County’s public safety channel on 470.4375 MHz. FCC Agents used direction finding techniques to track the errant signal to his residence after an interference complaint from the county emergency services was filed with the FCC in July of last year. FCC agents determined that Mr. Knudtson had activated the “Audio Relay” feature of his BTech radio, turning it into a simplex repeater that was rebroadcasting the 911 traffic. The FCC determined that Knudtson, a licensed Technician class amateur radio operator was operating outside of his authorized amateur frequency bands in violation of FCC rules, including willful interference with public safety communications. The mean letter serves as a warning from the FCC stating that further violations could possibly result in another mean letter and Mr. Knudtson must respond in writing within 10 days, describing the steps he is taking to prevent this from happening again.
and now for the FCC enforcement roundup. Here is the breakdown of what the FCC got up to in the month of March, 2026.
The FCC sent two violation letters to commercial radio stations.
They issued 10 orders, consent decrees, proposals or court filings, regarding various ongoing proceedings not related to radio-dorks.
They removed 7 fraudsters from participating in the federal E-Rate Telecommunications and Information Services Program for schools and libraries.
As reported only moments ago, they sent a scary Letter to a man in Pittsburgh for interfering with his local emergency services communications system, the only action of this type for the entire month.
And the part that youve all been waiting for, the grand total of fines and jail sentences imposed by the FCC for CB radio, amateur radio and GMRS radio users was ZERO.
Join me again next week.. or sooner, when I may, or may not, do this again. Good night, and have a pleasant tomorrow. [Roger Beep!]
