Abandoned convent originally built for the sisters of mercy in 1928 The convent was built to bring christian sympathy and consolation in times of distress in the industrial area of town. The nuns were known for taking in women who had become pregnant and ceased operating as a convent in 1957. The convent has now been removed from the original site to make way for the motorway extension that would run straight over the top of it. Local council are looking for a new home to site the convent in the town as it is has heritage significance and is in the local conservation area. I originally thought the convent would be pulled down as the neighbour I spoke with said he approached the owners and there was too much asbestos in the building . Unfortunately I couldn't get into one half of the convent but I managed to get a good look around anyway. Can't say it looked too conventy if there is such a thing. I thought there'd be more religious inspired detail in there but I know nothing about convents. It would have been nice to explore the whole place as it was huge and it would have been very imposing
