These limestone caverns were discovered by deer hunters in 1948, although possibly used by the Natives over the decades prior. Over one mile of passages have been mapped, and there are several underground lakes. The atmosphere is humid and dusty, and the temperature stays at a constant 70ºF all year. The canyon from which the caves take their name is derived from a prospector, Alex McCay, who lost his hot sauce while having lunch sometime during the 1880s.
