This hike traverses the old Sante Fe Railway, which ran from Kansas City, Kansas to Los Angeles, California. The railroad bed drops 112 feet per mile, with majestic views and steep canyon sides. Completed in 1882, this impressive 328-foot tunnel now lies abandoned and left to the ravages of time. Currently used by hikers and horseback riders.
It was classed as the most dangerous railroad due to the number of derailments and fatalities.
During WWII, a watchtower was constructed and manned 24/7 to protect the troops being carried by rail. The last train passed through in 1959 and this stretch of rail was decommissioned.
