Today’s video took us 15 miles deep into the Tennessee woods on side-by-sides, hauling batteries and gear into the mountains to check out something truly unreal — an abandoned 1974 Caterpillar Inc. D9 dozer that’s been sitting exactly where it died decades ago.
This massive dozer was originally used in the coal mines, but after a huge section of the mountain washed away, there was no physical way to recover it. With no access for trucks or heavy equipment and only narrow ATV trails leading in, the D9 was simply left behind — and it’s been untouched ever since.
Today, we decided to answer the question everyone asks…
Will it start?
After hauling in fresh batteries and getting everything hooked up, we somehow managed to get this nearly 50-year-old machine running again. The engine fired, but the hydraulics are not working, which tells us we’ll likely need to make another trip back in with hydraulic oil and supplies to see if we can get it fully functional.
