The Ryan X-13 Vertijet takes off vertically from the mobile platform/launch trailer. The aircraft flies horizontally through the air and then is filmed landing vertically, mooring to the platform. Silent clip. The Ryan X-13 was an experimental aircraft which began its development in 1947 under contract with the U.S. Navy. Part of the X-Plane Program, the X-13 was designed as a Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) fighter. Almost ten years later, it successfully completed a full cycle of vertical takeoff to hover, transitioned to horizontal flight, then landed vertically on a mobile platform on April 11, 1957.
