The image captured by Hubble shows a soft, glowing haze surrounding the comet—a signature that it’s beginning to warm up as it gets closer to the Sun. This warm-up causes frozen material on the comet’s surface to turn directly into gas, dragging dust along with it and forming what astronomers call a coma. While a few bright streaks appear in the photo due to energetic particles hitting the camera, the comet remains perfectly visible.
This hazy glow confirms that 3I Atlas is active, which isn’t surprising for a comet. What is surprising is its origin. This one didn’t come from anywhere near the Sun. It’s actually from outside our solar system—an interstellar traveler.
Look closely at the image and you’ll notice the comet seems stretched along its path. That’s not a long tail—it’s a blur caused by its high velocity. The comet is racing through space at nearly 60 kilometers per second, and during the 100-second photo exposure, it moved just enough to smear slightly in the frame.
