Starship Flight 12 is clearly taking longer than expected. The launch was originally expected around the end of December, but that didn’t happen. Now we’re almost halfway through January, and there’s still no launch.
But once you take a closer look at what SpaceX is actually doing at Starbase, it becomes clear this isn’t just a delay. They’re working on something important, and by the end of this video, it’ll make a lot more sense why Flight 12 hasn’t launched yet.

We’ve seen 11 Starship launches so far, and unfortunately a lot of those flights ran into serious problems. Some ended early, some lost control, some didn’t make it to the part of the mission everyone wanted to see, and a few ended the loud way. And when people talk about what’s holding Starship back, they usually point at engines, or ground systems or the insane complexity of catching a booster with mechanical arms.
But what most of us don’t fully appreciate is that one of the simplest-looking parts of the vehicle and it can ruin the whole mission even when everything else is working. The heat shield.
When you really think about it, the heat shield is the “you shall not pass” line. It doesn’t matter how powerful your engines are, how clean your staging looks, or how perfect your landing flip is. If your thermal protection is weak, you’re not building a reusable spaceship, you’re building a one-time fireworks show.
