In the cold emptiness of space, a new object has drawn the attention of astronomers worldwide. Named 3I Atlas, it is only the third known interstellar object to pass through our solar system. Its arrival has sparked intense debate. At first glance, it might seem like just another comet or asteroid. But as observations came in, scientists began to see details that didn’t fit the usual patterns.
Among those studying it is Professor Avi Loeb, known for exploring bold possibilities about extraterrestrial technology. Instead of waiting for the object to reach its closest point to the Sun in late October, Loeb and his team quickly began running calculations. What they found suggested something far from ordinary.
Data from the Hubble Space Telescope revealed that 3I Atlas emits an unusual glow. This glow does not match what astronomers expect from a typical comet. Loeb has even suggested it could point toward the possibility of artificial origin. His reasoning gained more attention when scientists noticed that the tail of 3I Atlas points in the opposite direction compared to most comets. Normally, a comet’s tail is pushed away from the Sun by solar wind, but in this case, it seems to be positioned as if the object is slowing down.
If the 3I Atlas were just a natural body, it would be fully under the influence of the Sun’s gravity. Based on its hyperbolic path, astronomers agree it will eventually leave the solar system, passing no closer than about 240 million kilometers from Earth — farther than the distance between Earth and the Sun.
