Hanazaki Paisagismo Studio, Architecture Meets Landscape in São Paulo, Project by Studio Guilherme Torres
Located in Pinheiros, the studio of Hanazaki Paisagismo redefines the relationship between architecture and landscape, transforming a compact urban site into a lush, immersive environment where vegetation becomes the central architectural element.
Designed in collaboration between Studio Guilherme Torres and Alex Hanazaki, the project was conceived as an “intelligent office”, a highly optimized workspace where every square meter is carefully articulated to balance function, spatial clarity, and sensory experience.
Set within one of the most dynamic neighborhoods in São Paulo, the project challenges traditional office typologies by reversing the expected relationship between built form and nature. Instead of entering architecture and then discovering the garden, here the experience begins immediately within greenery, dissolving boundaries between interior and exterior.
The architectural language is defined by strong contrasts and layered materials. A striking composition of white and black volumes establishes the base of the project, while elements such as shou sugi ban wood, a traditional Japanese burnt wood technique, introduce cultural references and texture. This structured, almost minimal framework becomes the stage for an explosion of tropical vegetation.
Facing the constraints of a small plot, the design incorporates vertical gardens powered by hydroponic systems, allowing dense planting without soil. These living walls become a fundamental strategy, not just aesthetic, but spatial, ensuring that every workspace is visually connected to greenery.
The program is distributed across multiple levels: meeting areas and private offices on the ground floor, collaborative workspaces on the mezzanine, and outdoor terraces that extend the working environment into the landscape. Flexible elements, such as movable roof systems, maximize the usable area while maintaining openness.
At its core, the project expresses a unique duality: a refined, almost Japanese sense of order, rooted in the architect’s heritage, combined with the vibrancy of Brazilian tropical landscapes. The result is a space where discipline and spontaneity coexist, where architecture frames nature, but ultimately allows it to take over.
In this film, we move beyond a conventional tour. Through a poetic and cinematic journey, we explore how light, material, and vegetation interact to shape atmosphere and perception, revealing a workspace that is as much about experience as it is about function.
