On our drive back to Valencia after a two day trip to Lleida, we made a spontaneous stop in Guimerà. The town rises up a narrow hillside, a maze of stone houses, arches and stepped alleyways leading toward its restored 11th century tower. The whole place feels frozen in another era, with medieval streets that twist upward past old gateways and rooms carved into rock. It’s small enough to explore on foot and quiet enough that you can hear your footsteps echo between the walls.

Guimerà has been settled since at least the Middle Ages, later playing a strategic role as a fortified village along the Corb River valley. The tower and surrounding ruins once guarded trade routes through the region, and many of the streets still follow their original medieval layout. Today the town hosts an annual medieval festival in August, when Guimerà fully embraces its past. If you’re ever driving through Catalonia, it’s the kind of place worth slowing down for, even if just for an hour like we did.
