A new era for weapons testing đź’Ą

To meet the nation’s evolving nuclear deterrence needs, Sandia has upgraded and expanded the 60-year-old Light Initiated High Explosives facility, which is at the forefront of qualifying reentry systems for the nuclear security enterprise.

“With its dramatic enhancement in capability, LIHE sets a new standard for the nuclear security enterprise by offering an unparalleled simulation environment for reentry systems,” said Associate Labs Director Jeff Heath.

In the video, a test unit undergoes a mechanical shock from a light-sensitive, spray-deposited explosive as part of nuclear deterrence qualification testing.
