The Living Mirror β Lookdown (Selene vomer) πͺπ
The Lookdown (Selene vomer) is a striking member of the jack family, native to the western Atlantic. It can grow to around 48 cm and is easily recognised by its extremely flat body, steep forehead and long dorsal and anal fin rays.
Although it looks almost scaleless, it actually has very small, thin and transparent scales. Beneath them, reflective cells called iridophores contain microscopic guanine crystals that reflect light like tiny mirrors β creating the spectacular silver-blue metallic appearance.
A fish that basically comes with its own natural chrome finish. π
