For more than a thousand years, large ceramic bowls have played an important role in China’s fishkeeping tradition.
During the Tang Dynasty (618–907), they were used as miniature ponds filled with fish and aquatic plants. In the Song Dynasty (960–1279), colorful crucian carp—the ancestors of today’s goldfish—became highly valued ornamental animals.
By the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing Dynasties (1644–1912), these vessels had developed into carefully maintained living displays.
Their care followed the seasons: shaded during hot summers, protected during cold winters, and renewed with plants and young fish in spring. These bowls were far more than decoration—they represented harmony, prosperity and a small piece of nature brought into the home.
In many ways, they were the predecessors of the modern aquarium.
