Synonym: Cichlasoma synspilum
The colourful Redhead or Quetzal Cichlid originates from the Atlantic slope of Central America, particularly the Usumacinta River drainage in southern Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. It inhabits lakes, lagoons and the slower sections of rivers.
Adults can reach approximately 30β35 cm, with males generally becoming larger and more robust than females.
During breeding, a compatible pair cleans a flat stone or another solid surface before laying the eggs. A female may produce several hundred eggs, occasionally up to around 1,000. Both parents guard the eggs and later lead their free-swimming fry through the territory, aggressively chasing away potential predators.
