The 2022 Church of the Brethren Annual Conference met, live, on the banks of the Missouri River in Omaha, Nebraska. It was the first gathering for the “Big Meeting” in three years due to the pandemic. Over 13-hundred attended the conference, including some who attended virtually. John Jones, a delegate from the Pacific Northwest shares his experience with “Brethren Voices” host, Brent Carlson.
This program features music of Scott Duffey, and a challenge to the church body by Annual Conference Moderator, David Sollenberger. Cliff Kindy shares a life changing experience as a member of the Christian Peace Makers Team. When in danger, “an enemy” provided medical assistance to his group, following the start of the Iraq war.
The Conference also returned to a busy business schedule after focusing on the compelling vision in 2021. Delegates accepted the concerns of a query from Southern Ohio and Kentucky District. The query asked, “How can we stand with People of Color, to offer sanctuary from violence and dismantle systems of oppression and racial inequity in our congregations, neighborhoods, and nation?” The query was adopted along with implementation through a two-year study/action process led by the district and On Earth Peace.
In another business action, Jones shared that 77 percent of Church of the Brethren pastors are less than full time or less than fully compensated. A new “Integrated Annual Ministry Agreement and Revised Guidelines for Pastors’ Salaries and Benefits” and a “Revised Minimum Cash Salary Table for Pastors” was adopted as presented by the Pastoral Compensation and Benefits Advisory Committee. This creates a fairer and easier framework for calculating pastors’ pay and benefits.
