They said, “I see you sharing experimental, noisy, adventurous music… how did you become so fearless!?”
Let me just set one thing straight:
I am NOT fearless.
I have loads of fears. Doubts. Insecurities.
Heck, I still get nervous before EVERY SINGLE coaching call with my clients (not many people know that, but it’s true). Why? Because I care deeply about them—and they’re astonishingly rad people.
But the part of that statement that’s 100% true is that I NEVER apologize for being myself. (And neither should you!)
When it comes to fear, there are 2 things I do differently that have helped me create the musical life I have today:
1) I treat fear & nerves as a beacon for what I want to move TOWARD.
Obviously I’m not talking about life-threatening fear here, but if I notice my heart is racing & palms are sweaty because of a creative opportunity, I trust it’s because I’ll grow from it—big time.
Nervousness means something GOOD is coming.
These days when I get butterflies and a lil’ bit of “WTF am I doing??” I think to myself, “ooh, this is gonna be good.” 🔥
2) I prioritize COURAGE over fearlessness—every time.
Courage is about doing the thing anyways, even if you’re afraid of how folks will receive it, or whether it’ll work out.
Courage is about committing to your ideas, even if you’re afraid people might think it’s “too much.”
There’s a @rickrubin quote I love, which is: “your desire to create must be bigger than your fear around it.” And for me, that desire directly translates into courage.
It’s okay to have fear.
It’s okay to have nerves.
It’s okay to have doubts, insecurities, & all the things.
What’s NOT okay is letting any of those things stop you from making music.
My invitation for you today is to be courageous & do one thing in your creative practice that freaks you out. Then let me know in the comments what it was so I can celebrate with you!! 🎉
