In this video, I take a brief look at Kapiti island's tidal currents, and show you the effect they have as they flow past Airplane island.
Understanding these currents is vital for a trip across to the island, and I strongly recommend consulting the relevant marine chart for the area, I used NZ46, although NZ4631 has much finer detail.
these currents do not coincide with high and low tide, and slack water is not at peak tide, this has caught out many paddlers.
