An estimated 2.1 million Americans live with type 1 diabetes, a chronic condition that requires constant monitoring and comes with the risk of serious complications, including heart disease, stroke, and blindness.
UC San Francisco scientists helped usher in the era of type 1 diabetes prevention nearly 40 years ago. Since then, they’ve identified the first biomarker for the disease and developed the first FDA-approved therapy, Teplizumab. Today, they are working to overcome the biggest barriers to a cure: halting harmful autoimmune responses and preventing immune rejection.
