Today my mother passed away, surrounded by her 5 children. Yesterday, my wife, kids, and I had driven down to open Christmas presents and say our goodbyes - we knew my mom would not likely be with us long. I'm glad we were there and that she could see my children open the presents she got them. It brought her so much joy. I'm thankful I got to say my goodbyes and show her just how much she meant to me. I got to let her know she was my best friend.
Last night after she was transferred to the nursing home, I said my final goodbye - the last moment I would hear her speak. She said I was her favorite son... named Mike.
This morning, at 6:30AM I saw the text that her breathing had changed an hour earlier. I didn't think I'd make it to see her 1.5 hours away. Thankfully, I did. I sat by her side until the end, holding her arm.
We listened to my entire Songs For Sleeping album, which I knew she liked. She passed away during the song "Weeping Willow" (she loved willow trees). The next song was from the next album, titled "The sky and the clouds" and it just seemed very fitting.
I miss my mom so much - and it hasn't even been a day. But I know her body was failing her long before it was time. She has a long list of issues that she finally succumbed to. But she lived a beautiful life - and she created a beautiful world for all of her children. For that I am thankful. She is now at peace.
I love you Mom.
