The God in the Bowl, written by Robert E. Howard, the creator of Conan provides some insight into Conan's personal sense of ethics when it comes to violence and crime.
Conan is paid to steal a precious object in a rich man's home. As Conan is creeping through the house, the story begins.
The guardsmen came upon a tall powerfully built youth, naked but for a loin-cloth, next to a body on the floor. The youth's skin was burned brown as by the suns of the wastelands, and the guards glanced nervously at his broad shoulders, massive chest and heavy arms.
The stranger looked at the body on the floor more in curiosity than surprise.
"Why did you kill him?" Asked Arus the guardsman nervously.
The other shook his head. "I didn't kill him. Who is he?"
"The owner of the house."
It turns out in the story, that the master of the house was actually betrayed by a Stygian sorcerer who sent him a snake in a bowl that got out and strangled the man.
They discover the snake, which Conan kills, and then for good measure he takes control of the situation and escapes by killing one of the men and incapacitating the others.
Conan's code of ethics is brutal, but he has a barbarian's sort of honor. He has no qualms about stealing or killing, but he is honest.
He would never betray his word and would not kill an unarmed person or someone who doesn't fight back.
More than once he's been offered money by someone who wants to quietly silence a rival with a knife in the dark. He always refuses.
