The Russian T-90 is one of the best examples of iterative tank design done right. The story starts in the mid-1980s, with a push to modernize the T-72. The army needed to refresh its fleet and had a few ways to go about it: commit to an entirely new main battle tank, develop something new on existing foundations, or simply upgrade what was already in service.
