By 1942, Soviet aviation found itself in a difficult position. The Yakovlev Design Bureau already had the successful Yak-1 and Yak-7 to its name, but the aircraft industry still faced an acute shortage of aluminum alloys — and the army still needed a more advanced fighter suitable for mass production, so the bureau continued refining the Yak-7's design.
