One day Katrina noted that the ice on the pond had changed quite a bit in the previous 24 hours. I had noticed it too: the white ice had become a dirty brown for a day, and then back to white. Opportunity lost. But I started doing time lapses of the pond for the next 9 days, until the ice finally melted. During that time, there were a few cold snaps, so the ice receded, then was restored, and eventually disappeared. I thought I heard peepers last night as I went to bed.
