Most winters, Lake Champlain freezes over, often thick enough to drive cars on it. This winter, the ice has been very thin. Once the wind and waves became stronger, the ice broke up into thin plates perhaps 8 inches across. The plates align vertically, and the waves move them up and down. The result is beautiful both visually as well as audibly. The wind was strong enough that you cannot really hear the glass-like tinkling as the thousands of ice sheets jostle together. A really magical moment that the video just shows a hint of.
