An eight-vehicle crash on I-291 West in South Windsor left three people seriously injured and three others with minor injuries, according to the South Windsor Fire Department.

Nine people were inside the vehicles involved in the crash near Exit 2, which happened around 7:45 a.m. near the one-lane work zone at the Bissell Bridge. Officials said the vehicles included a truck, pickup truck, cars and a school transport van. One passenger in the school van was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The South Windsor Fire Department says it has responded to five crashes in the area recently. Connecticut State Police are investigating the cause of the crash. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection also responded to clean up an oil spill.

NBC Connecticut reached out to the Department of Transportation about concerns surrounding the work zone and is waiting to hear back.
