The possibilities in using spherical capture devices like the 8K @insta360 X4 to #GuassianSplat is intriguing. Here I captured the Atrium at the @oregonzoo as I walked through at an even gate on Auto, 8K 30fps. From their I picked every 10th frame, and cut it up into 14 overlapping planes for each frame, which were brought into COLMAP as pinhole cameras, processed and brought into 4X faster Gaussian Splat renderer than PostShot that I cannot disclose at this time (will update this post when I can) to create a .PLY which I brought back into PostShot to clean up and then render to this video.
Sadly, even an 8K 360 camera, only provides about 1400x1400 image, far below the resolution I feel is required to get quality Gaussian Splats, which can be accomplished with 4K images from most recent smart phones like the iPhone 13 Pro Max used with the iOS app to complement the desktop Gaussian Renderer used here. It is my hope though to improve and reduce the number of steps by creating a hemispherical rotation transform instead of equirectangular to planar conversion process.
