Shasta Dam Celebrates 80 Years: Honoring Legacy and Future of This Engineering Marvel!

Did you know the same legendary engineer who led the construction of Hoover Dam also built Shasta Dam? His name was Frank T. Crowe, and over 80 years ago, he turned Shasta over to the Bureau of Reclamation—marking one of the greatest engineering feats in California history.
In this video, we take you behind the scenes of our recent 80th anniversary celebration at Shasta Dam and Powerplant. Nearly 100 people gathered to honor the past, celebrate the present, and look toward the future of this iconic infrastructure.
“This was an awesome event!” said Area Manager Elizabeth Hadley. “I’m so proud of our team and the amazing Reclamation guides who brought Shasta’s story to life for so many visitors.”
Acting Commissioner David Palumbo and Acting Regional Director Adam Nickels paid tribute to the more than 4,700 workers who helped build the dam—many of them families who moved to this remote site to take part in something historic.
We even had a special visit from Frank T. Crowe’s great-nephew, also named Frank, who carries on the name and legacy of one of America’s greatest builders.
Built during the Great Depression and completed during World War II, Shasta Dam remains a cornerstone of California’s water and power systems—delivering life-sustaining resources to farms, cities, and ecosystems across the state.
