80 The Top of the Mountain

In 1980 I was ten feet tall,
Too self-assured and aloof,
I reckoned I could do anything,
And I was bullet proof.

We took our students on a field trip,
To a ski resort to the west,
They found a mountain and a snow machine,
And let Mother Nature do the rest.

Back then you couldn’t trick me,
Being a certified knowledge fountain,
So after reading a magazine article on skiing,
I’d be the best skier on the mountain.

I became an expert on paper,
Mastering plowing and shushing,
And keep your skis close together,
Use your ankles instead of pushing.

When I finally got my ski boots on,
I was keen for my first trial,
I rushed to the lift to the highest hill,
So the kids could see my style.

It was at the lift I noticed something wrong,
As I ascended ever higher,
There was not much real snow at all,
Only ice, slush, and mire.

When I released the rope I was sideways,
Then twisting down into a bend,
I drug my hands until I reached the bottom,
And I never went skiing again.
