A major food-safety operation in Navi Mumbai has uncovered an alleged racket involving the tampering of manufacturing and expiry dates on packaged food.
The Maharashtra FDA and Navi Mumbai Crime Branch seized 4,942 cartons of food products worth ₹75.21 lakh from a warehouse in Turbhe.
Investigators allege that original dates were erased and replaced with fresh dates, while labels containing ingredients and nutritional information were allegedly altered on some products.
The seized stock reportedly included popular brands and products such as Maggi, Kurkure, Lay's, Bingo, Knorr and packaged beverages.
An FIR has been registered and the establishment's food licence has been suspended.
But the bigger question is: how easy is it to fool the consumer? And how can you tell whether the label on your food packet can actually be trusted?
