Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced plans to build a new integrated Secretariat complex in Chennai, spread across 20 lakh square feet at an estimated cost of ₹1,200 crore.
The announcement was made under Rule 110 in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. The proposed complex is aimed at replacing the existing fragmented administrative setup with a modern, state-of-the-art facility.
Currently, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and Secretariat function from the historic Fort St. George campus. The government has cited space constraints and restrictions related to the preservation of the heritage buildings as key reasons for the proposed new complex.
Vijay said the state government controls only around four acres of the 107-acre Fort St. George campus, while the remaining area is managed by Defence authorities and the Archaeological Survey of India.
