Manipur’s ethnic conflict has claimed 306 lives and left 49 people missing, according to figures presented by State Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam in the Assembly. The figures are recorded up to August 31, 2026.
The violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities began on May 3, 2023, after a Tribal Solidarity March protesting the demand for Scheduled Tribe status for the Meitei community. What followed was a prolonged crisis marked by killings, arson, displacement and deep mistrust.
