Possibly the highlight of the year on the mainline steam circuit would see two steam tours head into Devon on separate steam tours and they would run close together, in fact, very close just three minutes apart on their return legs. A warm and windy day was backdrop for the two specials and we start off at Whiteball Bank where we get our first glimpse of the double headed Mayflower excursion which was pounding its way to Plymouth. About 30 minutes later 5029 Nunney Castle was heading over the climb on its way to Kingswear.
There was another planned shot just after the pathing stop at Totnes but the this was not taken and unfortunately I wasn't able to arrive in time. This along with my chosen location now not available due to high crops I was unable to to get to my backup location in time. Thankfully for the return things went a bit more smoothly. For the return we captured the double header negotiating the tight curves towards Dainton Tunnel. Having now left the Devon Banks behind we headed to Tiverton Parkway for the finale.
For the finale we would see both returning steam tours head northbound to Whiteball Summit within just four minutes of each other. Both scenes are captured just after the station with all locos going well. Whilst heading home we attempted an audacious plan to get one more shot of the double header. We needed a bit of luck as we were about three minutes ahead of the train. Worle station was our target as it was just four minutes off the M5 motorway. To our luck and amazement, a Bristol bound train from Weston Super Mare was let out in front the double header at Worle Junction and we made it with three minutes to spare. What a great way to end the day. Definitely a day of mixed fortunes .
