Where do new genes come from? This is a question young-earth creationists love to pose as if it's some unanswerable mystery. In this video, I respond directly to Wes from Creation Questions, who challenged viewers to convince him that evolution can explain de novo genes.
I walk through six well-documented mechanisms by which organisms generate genuinely new genetic information: gene duplication, de novo gene birth from non-coding DNA, retrotransposon hijacking, horizontal gene transfer, exon shuffling, and enzyme promiscuity. Each of these isn't just theoretical—we have observed examples in living organisms and can trace the genetic evidence of these processes throughout evolutionary history.
What I find particularly ironic is that young-earth creationists desperately need these mechanisms to be true. Their model requires thousands of species to emerge from just a handful of "kinds" on Noah's Ark in only 4,500 years. That's an enormous amount of genetic novelty in an impossibly short timeframe. So which is it—can new genetic information arise, or can't it?
The creationist claim that "mutations can't create new information" falls apart under scrutiny. When a duplicated gene takes on a new function that didn't exist in the ancestor, that IS new genetic information by any reasonable definition.

![5,700 Years of Caribbean Hurricanes: What Blue Hole Sediments Reveal About Earths History
Ancient Blue Hole Sediments Challenge Young Earth Creationism:
In this video I examine a recent research paper from Science Advances that analyzes a 30-meter sediment core extracted from the Great Blue Hole, a marine sinkhole offshore Belize. The study reveals an impressive 5,700-year record of tropical cyclone activity in the Caribbean, providing valuable climate data while simultaneously presenting significant challenges to Young Earth Creationist (YEC) models.
I walk through the scientific methodology used to date and analyze these sediment layers, explaining how researchers identified nearly 700 distinct tropical cyclone events preserved in the sedimentary record. I explain how scientists use varve counting (analyzing annual sediment layers), carbon-14 dating, and volcanic ash deposits as independent methods to verify the chronology. I explain how this geological record creates problems for models that compress Earths history into a few thousand years. The Blue Holes formation itself requires significant time for limestone cave development, roof collapse, and the subsequent accumulation of sediments - a sequence difficult to reconcile with a post-Flood timeline of just 4,350 years.
Chapters:
[00:00:01] Introduction to the Caribbean cyclone research paper
[00:03:04] Examining the Great Blue Hole and sediment core collection methods
[00:12:26] Dating techniques: Varve counting and Carbon-14 correlation
[00:20:06] Formation of Blue Holes: Carbonate platforms and cave collapse
[00:27:20] Young Earth Creationist challenges with the chronology
[00:33:51] Climate implications and scientific significance of the research
The video demonstrates how scientific investigation of natural phenomena frequently produces evidence that contradicts Young Earth timelines. I note this study is just one of a thousand papers published every day containing data incompatible with a 6,000-year-old Earth. The research also provides valuable insights into how tropical cyclone patterns have changed over millennia, with evidence suggesting unprecedented increases in cyclone activity during the industrial age.
