This month marks 50 years since the Supreme Court's decision in a case called Gregg v. Georgia, a landmark ruling that found capital punishment is not a violation of the 8th Amendment prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment. The decision opened the door to allowing states to resume carrying out the death penalty after there had been a four-year nationwide pause. Twenty-three states and the District of Columbia have abolished the death penalty or stopped carrying out executions altogether. But Florida remains one of the nation's most active death penalty states. Spectrum News political anchor Errol Louis is joined by Melanie Verdecia, an attorney and legal writer who tracks Florida's death penalty on her Substack, to talk about those developments.
