![Paleontology News: Dinosaurs Sounded Like Birds! Advanced Dinosaur Larynx Discovered
A specimen of Pinacosaurus has revolutionized the way paleontologists think about how dinosaurs sounded and communicated. 3-D laser scanning revealed a complex, advanced larynx inside of the ankylosaurs hyobranchial apparatus, revealing that they were likely able to produce birdlike sounds. Since ankylosaurs are so distantly related to birds, this may mean that other dinosaurs, like T.rex and Spinosaurus, were able to do the same. This study lends credence to the idea that some dinosaurs were able to develop biological culture, as complex communication strategies would make it easier for individuals to cooperate and develop mutually-beneficial intraspecific relationships.
