5 Soft and Grey
1
I think they called them Monkey Socks,
And starting soft and Grey,
Then ending in the heel and toe,
With a half-moon scarlet ray.
2
Anyone with the skill,
And if the socks were not too tall,
Could sew these socks inside out,
Forming a little ball.
3
The ball would be the monkey’s head,
His mouth the scarlet ray,
His body was the ankle band,
And both were soft and grey.
4
But then the seamstress always cheated,
By adding fabric for the feet,
Then mending all the stitches in,
Just to make it neat.
5
But these were work socks from the jungle,
Now filled with a craftsmen’s lies,
More fabric for the tail and arms then,
And buttons for the eyes.
6
Then the final indignation,
Reaching in from the back,
Stuffing random colors in,
From the scraps in a fabric sack.
7
In the final abomination,
Its birth took the whole day,
Still not a sock or monkey,
What it was soft and grey.
