47 Magic Mushroom
1
In the spring of 1972,
I and a friend named Mike,
Were working at the ISU computer center,
Where we worked our shift all night.

We got to talking about adventure,
You know, like Huckleberry Finn,
Why not float a boat down the Wabash River,
Beats this cold room that we are in.

We would buy a boat and add a motor,
And provisions for several days,
But we didn’t need to bring a lot,
As we would hunt mushrooms along the way.

That April turned wet and cold,
So we built a shelter on the boat,
And loaded down with all our gear,
That boat would barely float.

So with our wives to see us off,
And the little children too,
The wind was howling at our backs,
We were seamen through and through.

But then the wind turned deadly cold,
And we went ashore for some rest,
And if it wasn’t for the fire Mike built,
I would have frozen myself to death.

The next day we were hit with a storm,
That was more like a typhoon,
The day after that we made it home,
And never found a single mushroom.

It’s the kind of story they make movies about,
Call it “Green Horns on Patrol.”
But wisdom says if offered a journey on the Wabash,
If it is wintertime don’t go.
