4.1 Growth And realizing you ran away

I think the most important growth
Can change the way we are,
Which could be for the worst I guess,
Or make us a rising star.

I ran away and joined the Army
In nineteen-sixty-eight.
Vainglory I called it duty,
But I was running from my fate.

But wasn’t I a patriot,
What, to invest in those two years,
To carve out the center of my youth that way,
To fill with sweat and tears?

But growth sometimes means freedom,
To let your ego loose,
And to stand on the new high ground you found,
So, you can clearly see the truth.

Turns out I was made for the Army,
A fact I quickly learned.
It felt like I was coming home,
And I soared at every turn.

So, I made a three-point landing
In a place where I truly fit,
Now left to honestly ponder,
That other place I had quit.

So in that cold mirror of honesty,
I had truly run away.
There is no pride in running,
The real pride comes when you stay.
