1️⃣ Reassurance seeking:
Most kids ask for reassurance sometimes. With OCD, the relief doesn’t last. They feel a brief sense of calm, then the doubt comes right back, so they ask again and again to try to feel certain.

2️⃣ Getting stuck in their thoughts:
Kids can overthink, but OCD turns it into a loop. They might replay things, question their intentions, or try to “figure it out” until it feels right—but it never fully does.

3️⃣ Avoiding things they care about:
Kids naturally avoid things they don’t like. OCD avoidance is different. it’s driven by fear. They may avoid places, people, or activities not because they want to, but because it triggers intrusive thoughts or anxiety.

4️⃣ Big reactions that don’t seem to match the situation:
All kids get upset. With OCD, the reaction is tied to a need for certainty or control. A small mistake or “uncertain” moment can feel unbearable because they can’t resolve the feeling.

5️⃣ Confessing things they didn’t do:
Kids are taught to be honest. OCD can make them feel responsible for their thoughts, so they confess things just to relieve guilt or anxiety—even when nothing actually happened.

The difference isn’t the behavior. it’s the cycle behind it. OCD is driven by intrusive thoughts → anxiety → something they do to feel better → temporary relief → then it comes back again. That’s why it can be so easy to miss.

If you’re noticing this in a child and wondering if it might be more than “just a phase,” or you’re realizing you showed these patterns in your own childhood, you’re not overreacting—and you’re not alone.
