Whether they are farmed in tanks, ponds or offshore sea cages, or caught by nets in the ocean, the consumption of fish is cruel ๐ŸŸ Here are five problems with the commercial fish industry.

5. High stocking densities
Stocking density is important as it directly influences the survival, growth, behaviour and health of the fish on the farm. Offshore sea cages can hold up to 60,000 fish. As they grow, their space within the cages decreases until they are packed tightly together, most swimming in repetitive circles.

4. Pollution and mass deaths
Tonnes of uneaten fish food and large amounts of excrement from the fish in the cages end up in the local environment. High levels of pollution can lead to dangerously low levels of oxygen in the water and greater risks of disease, contributing to large numbers of deaths within the farms.

3. Freezing fish to death
The supposed โ€˜humaneโ€™ method of harvesting and killing farmed fish is to suck them into icy water to freeze them to death. Far from humane, it is a slow and painful death, sometimes taking half an hour for them to die ๐Ÿ’”

2. Live fish at restaurants
Some stores and restaurants display live fish, allowing customers to choose which individuals they would like killed. These tanks can often be crowded, inadequately managed and lead to illness or death. Fish are stunned with a blow to the head, have their jugular vein cut and are bled out.

1 Trawling and bycatch
Commercial fishing trawlers drag large nets through the water behind them, indiscriminately capturing all species in their wake - this is known as bycatch. The majority of the worldโ€™s fish stocks are now being fished to full capacity or are overfished. At the current rate, it is anticipated that our oceans will be void of fish by 2048 ๐ŸŒŠ
