Why does Bhutan have diplomatic relations with so few countries compared to almost every other nation on Earth? On a world map, Bhutan’s diplomatic network looks bizarre. Major powers like China and the United States are missing, while distant and seemingly random countries appear instead. In this video I attempt to explain why Bhutan is one of the most diplomatically selective states in the world. Exploring Bhutan’s history of isolation, its unique philosophy of Gross National Happiness, its deep relationship with India, and why formal relations with China remain unresolved despite (or maybe precisely because of) sharing a border. Rather than expanding diplomacy for influence or prestige, Bhutan uses diplomacy as a tool, opening itself to the world only on its own terms.
