Libya is officially one country, but in reality it’s divided between rival governments, competing armies, and vast areas with almost no central authority at all. In this video, we explore how Libya ended up with two governments at the same time, and why the country has historically been split into three distinct regions: Tripolitania, Cyrenaica, and Fezzan.
From ancient Phoenician and Greek colonies to Roman rule, Ottoman provinces, Italian colonization, Gaddafi’s dictatorship, and the modern civil war, Libya’s current division is the result of centuries of unresolved regional differences. Is Libya a country that was created before it ever became a nation? And could it eventually split into separate states?
