When World War 1 ended, the French forced the Germans to sign the Armistice in a train car. Two decades later, when Germany occupied French territory, Hitler set up a meeting in the exact same vehicle and had the French sign their Armistice under his terms. The Germans then made sure that history wouldn’t be able to repeat itself.

Upon the signing of the Armistice in 1918, the French Army requisitioned the train’s carriage, which belonged to the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits. A discreet location near Paris was selected to avoid humiliating the German delegation: the Rethondes Clearing in the Compiègne Forest. The Armistice was then signed on November 11.

Between 1922 and 1927, the car was exhibited at Les Invalides, and it was then relocated to the Armistice Clearing. Given that it was in deplorable conditions, the carriage had to be restored.

On June 21, 1940, Hitler himself retrieved it from storage and installed it in the clearing, where he planned his revenge and forced the French to sign their Armistice. The Fuhrer’s desire was to reuse the symbol with his enemy’s delegation.

After signing, Hitler ordered the clearing to be destroyed. The carriage, along with other monuments, was then transported to the German capital.

However, in 1945 the Germans blew the train up so it couldn’t be used against them in the future.

A carriage of the same series can be visited today at the Armistice Museum. It was identically fitted out, furnished, and adorned with the flags of the countries that participated in World War 1. Tags with the names of the participants are also on display at their corresponding seats.
