In December 2013, the Xbox One had just launched to the world, and it was so popular that it sold out literally everywhere. However, there was one big issue.
Gamers were absolutely furious that the console lacked new titles and offered no way to play existing Xbox 360 games. Users frantically searched online for an answer, but there was simply nothing to be found.
Although 4Chan was watching from the shadows, and /v/, their video game board, hatched a brilliant plan. They would create fake instructions that had the unsuspecting user go into the developer settings and type “freezone.reboot”. This would trigger the Xbox to get stuck in an endless reboot loop, making it completely unusable and requiring repairs from Microsoft.
It was absolutely perfect.
So 4Chan begins to spread the fake instructions on social media, gaming forums, and even the official Xbox website.
