In archviz, it is extremely common to use the 3ds Max + Vray combo, but what if we don't need to? Because I teach people from all over the world, sometimes I need to use only the default 3ds Max. Turns out not everyone has Vray, or can afford it. In this video/tutorial I explore what it looks like to use only the tools that come with Autodesk 3ds Max. That means lots of poly modeling, but it also means that when it comes to lighting, materials and rendering, everything is done with Arnold Render. Actually, I ended up liking Arnold Render quite a bit. It is a fully capable render engine as far as I can tell. Follow along with me on this project -- I'll demonstrate how I did it -- and see what you think about the results and the workflow. For me, it raised some interesting questions about rendering workflows, and how good one render engine is over another. I would love to know what you think.
What are your thoughts on VRay vs Arnold for a primary render engine. Or, maybe you use something else, like Corona. Why do you use the render engine that you do?
In addition to exploring those questions, this video can also be thought of as a tutorial, or a breakdown of how to create cool 3d projects using on standard 3ds Max poly modeling tools, and then using Arnold for lighting, materials and rendering. To me it is cool that some great rendering capabilities are built right into 3ds Max if you know the right render settings, and just a little bit about how to use Arnold.
