Miter saws are great when you need 0° to 50° cuts…but what do you do when the saw gives you the right angle but in the wrong place? For example, I can cut a 25° angle on this edge. But what I really want is that same 25 degrees on this edge instead. To do that normally, I’d need to swing the saw to 65˚, and my saw won’t go that far. So instead, I don’t change the saw, I change what the saw thinks is square.
To do that, I’ll need to change my fence. Instead of relying on the back fence, I’ll move the fence by adding a square sheet of plywood to the face. You’ll first need to add a hook to the back, which is just a board with a few screws in it, and then add a clamp to hold it in place. It doesn’t need to be fancy, it just needs to be easily clamped.
Now I can move my fence to the face that I want an angle on and make a cut.
You may be saying, Rob, what I really want to do is make a 65˚ cut, and 25 degrees on a different edge is a little confusing.
So let's look at the center of our miter saw as being 90 degrees. If you need a 65˚ cut, take the 90˚ center and subtract 65˚ from it. If you look at the saw gauge, it'll be 25˚, make your cut and you can be sure your angle is correct.
