Transferring a line drawn on a piece stock to the blade where it’ll be cut, can be problematic. For example, when I’ve marked my stock for a crosscut and place it on my sled, the blade being below and behind the stock often introduces parallax error, making it difficult to align the cut accurately. I usually transfer the mark around the edge to align it with the blade, but this risks introducing errors.
Instead, we can create a simple little transferring jig out of two pieces of stock. Both pieces will need to be thin with parallel edges. The first will be about 3 inches long. A second piece will be added to the end of it that will work like a bench hook, grabbing the end of the stock.
To make it we’ll take a square and clamp it to a piece of plywood, with the piece next to it. Flip the plywood over and take the second piece and super glue it to the edge. With the jig done, I can add it to my stock, next to the mark I made. Line it up to the blade and I know I'm square with the line.
Because it's so small, I can add it to my sled for the next time I'll need it.
