Wagner Leitmotifs | 37 Sword : Der Ring Des Nibelungen @wagnerleitmotifs7654 | Uploaded August 2013 | Updated October 2024, 10 hours ago.
This leitmotif is first heard in the forth scene of Das Rheingold.
This is one of the most important motifs in the cycle. It represents Sword, but not any sword, Nothung, the enchanted sword made by Wotan, given to Siegmund, shattered by Wotan, reforged by Siegfried and used to slay the dragon Fafner.
This motif is first heard before the sword is even made, because it foretells Wotans intention to make Nothung and leave it stuck in a tree for Siegmund to find in his hour of need.
The motif is derived from the Genesis or Nature motif, and from the middle C, is identical.
