In this episode of Cynical Sermons, we’re looking at 37 Bible verses that are often used as religious thought-terminating clichés — verses that sound wise, spiritual, or profound on the surface, but are frequently used to shut down questions, silence criticism, and tell people not to trust their own minds.
These are the verses that say:
👉 Don’t trust humans
👉 Don’t trust your heart
👉 Don’t trust your own understanding
👉 Human help is worthless
👉 Everyone is corrupt
👉 Everyone lies
👉 False teachers are everywhere
👉 And if you think you’re wise, you’re actually a fool
Convenient, right?
The problem is that every one of these claims still has to be interpreted by a human brain. Even when someone says they are “trusting God,” they are still relying on their own judgment, their own interpretation, and their own mental faculties to decide what God supposedly wants.
So today, we’re going through the Bible’s greatest hits of spiritual anti-humanism — the passages Christians often use to tell you that your heart is evil, your mind is unreliable, your relationships are suspect, your moral judgment is worthless, and your only hope is to shut up and submit.
But none of these verses are arguments.
They’re conversation-stoppers.
They’re shame tools.
They’re religious control mechanisms dressed up as wisdom.
